Ahhhhhh....Another Miserable Snowy Spring!!!

Yesterday I felt like a caged dog pawing at a symbolic door, wanting to be let out and ready to jump into spring. The morning was beautiful and I ran some errands, even getting in a short walk. However, as the afternoon progressed, the sun then hid behind cloudy gray skies, and it became chilly and windy--obvious signs that spring was not ready to come out and play.

Today the snow came down in large fat wet flakes. It really felt like it ought to be Christmas. It's been forecasted that the snow will melt by the end of this week, but it sure does not feel like it. Seriously, it was cold and miserable outside (I think "miserable" will be my favorite word to describe how I feel and the weather conditions in my part of the world). I'm getting very impatient because all of this snow feels so unreasonable and unfair (yeah, yeah, just blame global warming--but it sure as heck is not warm here). So I'm feeling very miserable.

The Groundhog Saw its Shadow, Right?

There was snow, then it melted. "Spring" officially began and I actually walked outside without a winter coat. Now there's snow again, and I'm wondering when it will melt and when spring will finally be here. I find the winter here brutal, not because of to the cold, snow and windchill (or when all three meets together to create the perfect winter storm), but due to the lack of sunlight. Several gray cloudy days can be tolerable, but when it becomes the norm...well, I can get a bit impatient.

In the meantime, I've been planning my garden and contemplating where I will grow certain plants. I can’t wait for the ground to thaw out and to start planting, but it also means that I have to do an inventory of all the plants that survived winter.

It's Alive!

I want to share a picture of my clematis plant. I purchased it in the fall at a greenhouse sale (now I wish I had purchased more), with intentions of planting it in my yard in the spring. Well, I brought it home and put it with the rest of my plants in my breakfast nook. As fall turned into winter, the plant became dry looking and leaves started to fall off. I thought it was dead and was so sad about losing my plant. Luckily, I was lazy (and still had a lot of faith that it was alive), kept watering my plant, and decided not to cut off the "dead" brown parts. Well, some time in January, my plant started shooting out green buds--from the "dead" parts. Well, this month a flower bud actually sprouted, and this week it BLOOMED! I'm so excited. I'm reconsidering whether I should plant the clematis outside, especially since it's doing so great in my home, but I think I should continue to plant it outside . I have a lamp post that sorely needs to be decorated, and it was meant to be outside.

Finally...My Own Letterpress!

Some of you already know that I've been searching far and wide for a letterpress to use in my business. Through sheer luck (but also with a lot of wishing and repeatedly asking the universe) I am in the process of acquiring a letterpress. I cannot express my excitement--and I am VERY EXCITED!!! It is a C&P 10x15, is in great condition, and it is huge. I can't wait to start printing on it.

Sponge Bob Squarepants

Lately, I've been catching up on my Sponge Bob Squarepants cartoons, and I must admit, I love that yellow sponge. Some days, I just want to be like Sponge Bob--live a simple life, work at a job I love, catch jellyfishes with a butterfly net, and not really have any worries at all. My beau could be Patrick, but then he refuses to dumb himself down. Anyhow, if you haven't watched a Sponge Bob cartoon in a while, or ever, you should catch up. Even if it is a rerun.

Really, I've Been Busy

Okay, many of you know of my situation right now (which I won't mention or go into detail) and I'm sure the first thought that may come into your mind is that I don't have to get up early in the morning (which is true, but I also admit that I've become a night owl). BUT, really, I have been busy (I like to think that I'm planning for my future and setting myself to head in the right path).

Anyhow, aside from digging back into my thesis (which I often find so hard to get into the right mood to write in an academic tone), I've been researching and honing my artistic skills again. Before I became an adult, I really wanted to be an artist, but along the way to adulthood I've somehow managed to persuade myselft from entering that profession. But lately, I've just wanted to be happy and so I've decided that creating art (even if it is abstract or consists of doodles) makes me happy. Seriously, there's so much inspiration much around me and the possibilites are endless.

I'm retraining my eyes and brain to conceptualize things in many different ways. I've also been learning A LOT about vector art. Also, I found out there's a free software program on the internet called Inkscape, which is similar to Adobe Illustrator, but with less features. I've just been teaching myself and using tutorials on the internet to do cool things with these programs. There have been days where I feel like I'm just ramming my head into a brick wall (especially when the tutorials are not clear or I have no idea what the terms mean), and days where I really wonder if I will actually ever learn a simple trick in Inkscape, BUT it's all well worth the effort when I finally accomplish a tiny task.

The one last thing I will mention, but won't go into much detail, is that I'm also learning to silkscreen. This definately requires a lot of planning and an eye to see images and objects in tonal qualities. I don't know if that makes sense, but I'll post pictures of a finished project once I actually create something noteworthy.

Oh, Obama!

Today, I (along with a good friend) spent a good part of the day waiting in line to see Barack Obama speak. He came to the Target Center, and I was one of the 20,000 able to get a ticket. We arrived at the Target Center by 1 p.m., but it took at least fifteen minutes for us to walk to the "end of the line." Once in line, we saw that the line continued to grow and grow and grow. After two hours of standing in the cold, and losing all feeling in my fingers and toes, we finally entered the Target Center. We found seats up in the higher sections (think "nose bleed" seats), but the view was still wonderful. A little after 4 p.m., Barack Obama came out to speak. Now, I have not yet decided who I'm going to vote for, but I found Barack Obama to be very charismatic, hopeful, and somewhat endearing (I know he's a politician, but I really want to believe in all of his idealistic ideology). Anyhow, it was quite an experience, to say the least.

For the Love of Paper

Here's another "interesting" tidbit about me, I LOVE paper, especially cards and stationary. My collection keeps on growing and when I think that I should stop adding to my collection, I'll come across something that will catch my eye (the picture above does not do justice to my collection). Very, very rarely will I ever pay more than three dollars for a set of cards or stationary. Much of what makes up my collection comes from the thrift store or the clearance aisle.

I have more paper product than I can actually use in my lifetime, but I love paper. I love the feel of the different papers' weights, the designs on the paper, and the colors. I'm still a big advocate of hand written letters (although I admit that I am guilty of sending out more emails than "snail mail"), and I'm trying to send out more letters through the post office. How could you not love receiving a hand written letter?

Fonts, Fonts, Fonts

If you haven’t realized it by now, I have a lot of lame hobbies and I can easily get fixated on certain things. So, lately I’ve been searching for free fonts on the internet and adding fonts to my computer. There are MANY fonts on the internet that are free, and may be used for personal or even commercial purposes (of course, not all of the fonts are free). Anyhow, I’ve found several “typewriter” fonts and I’m so in love with these fonts. When I get into a creative mood (meaning that I’m going to start writing or adding to my “great” novel), I use a “typewriter” font to further boost my creative juices. It’s so cool to type on a laptop, but have the font look as if I’m using an old typewriter.

A New Year's Resolution

I recently saw my family and was reminded of how much time had flown by. In my mind, my younger brothers remain ten years old or younger. Although I cherish my memories of my younger brothers as being under the age of eleven, my daily interactions with my younger brothers forced me to recognize the fact that they are now hormonal teens and a bratty tween. This is not to say that I don’t ever want them to grow up, only that I’ve missed out on watching them growing up.

All of this reverie points out a personal flaw – which I fully recognize and have been trying to correct – which is that I live too much for the future and not enough in the present. I like to plan and have certain ideas of how certain aspects of my life ought to turn out, and once a particular goal is reached I continue to plan for the next future outcome. Of course, in the midst of planning, I often forget about my current surroundings and the people in my life. So when I finally stop planning and just live for the moment, it is only then do I realize how much time has passed me by and lament for not living in the moment. So, this year, as a new year's resolution, I want to live more in the present (good or bad).
