Friday's Quote: Maya Angelou

"All great achievements require time."---Maya Angelou

When my first son was born, I had this great idea of planting a tree or something in honor of his birth, and this idea too continued with my second. I had bought a fig tree and hoped it would grow in a pot since fig trees aren't hardy enough for my zone 4. But it was not meant to be. As for my second, since I had him so soon after I gave birth to my first, I didn't have the time or energy to even think about planting or gardening.

Fast forward to today and to the curious times we're living in right now, I have a little bit more time and am making the effort to get back into gardening again (last year was my first attempt and it turned out okay). So, today, I planted a Heritage raspberry plant for my children. They both love picking and eating fresh raspberries. I had an inkling during the last two years, but I didn't get my lazy butt to actually do something until this spring. It really was just a matter of where to plant the raspberry plant (since they spread so quickly and crazily). I was bemoaning the fact that had I known four years ago how much my boys love eating fresh raspberries, I would've planted several plants and the plants would be mature enough now to give them bumper crops (all great achievements require time). Oh well, better late than never.

With the Heritage raspberry plant, my boys might actually get a small crop in the fall (meaning a handful). Hopefully, that will bring some happiness to their tummies until the plant has more time to grow, expand, and fully mature.

I hope all is well in your neck of the world. What do you have growing in your garden?

This year my wife and I have decided to start a forest garden. We have planted two persimmons and one fig tree. A lot more to plant..

Will your garden also include citrus trees, such as kumquats, oranges, lemons, and limes? How about guava trees?

Good luck to your fruitful garden (pun intended).
